Connecticut Man Speaks Out After Two Decades of Captivity
Location: CONNECTICUT
A Connecticut man held captive for twenty years shares his harrowing experience, thanking rescuers and announcing efforts to reclaim his identity.
Survivor Speaks Out
The 32-year-old man, who has chosen to identify himself as “S,” is publicly sharing his story for the first time since being rescued. Having endured years of abuse at the hands of his father and stepmother, he is now seeking justice and accountability, while expressing gratitude for the care he has received since his release.
Details of the Captivity
According to information from the nonprofit organization Survivors Say, S was confined in a small room in a Waterbury home from the age of 11. He reported that his captivity began when he was suddenly withdrawn from public school, coinciding with concerns raised by officials to the state’s Department of Children and Families (DCF).
His ordeal came to light in February when he intentionally set fire to the house, a desperate act orchestrated in a bid for freedom. Rescuers found him severely malnourished, weighing only 69 pounds, and suffering from numerous untreated medical conditions.
Conditions of Living
S revealed that during his captivity, he was prohibited from accessing basic necessities, including adequate food and medical care. He was only allowed out of his small room to perform chores and stated that he had not attended school for nearly two decades.
Allegations in an arrest warrant indicate that his stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, threatened him with further deprivation if he disclosed the abuse. S recounted how he was advised to lie during past visits from DCF, aimed at investigating the family’s situation.
Legal Developments
In an ongoing legal case, Kimberly Sullivan faces multiple charges, including kidnapping and assault, but has pleaded not guilty. Her lawyer has criticized law enforcement for releasing unsettling images from the home, labeling the action as reckless and potentially harmful to public perception of the case.
A Call for Justice
In his statement, S expressed gratitude towards medical professionals who have aided in his recovery and those who stood by him, including community organizations. “This is not the name given to me by my parents when I was born. I am choosing a new name for myself,” he stated, underlining his journey towards reclaiming control over his life.
He also conveyed his desire for respect for his privacy as the legal process continues, urging all involved to cooperate fully with authorities seeking to deliver justice.
Support from the Community
In a significant display of support, the Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury initiated a GoFundMe campaign which has raised nearly $270,000. These funds are aimed at assisting S with his medical treatment, therapy, and legal expenses as he begins to rebuild his life after the trauma of his past.
