Investigation Reveals Betsy Arakawa’s Final Internet Searches Prior to Death
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Authorities have released a comprehensive investigation report detailing the last messaging and online activity of Betsy Arakawa, the late wife of actor Gene Hackman, just days before her departure. The documents reveal that Arakawa was exploring various health concerns, notably flu-like symptoms and respiratory techniques.
Health Concerns Leading Up to Her Death
Betsy Arakawa passed away in February due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe illness transmitted by rodents, manifesting symptoms such as flu-like illness, headaches, and serious breathing difficulties, as stated by investigators.
Gene Hackman, her husband, reportedly suffered from heart disease compounded by Alzheimer’s disease, with his own passing occurring about a week later.
Online Searches and Communication
The recent report indicates that on February 8 and 12, Arakawa had several open bookmarks on her computer, which included inquiries related to COVID-19 symptoms and questions about dizziness and nosebleeds. Her last digital search occurred on the morning of February 12, where she sought a healthcare professional in Santa Fe.
Prior to her death, Arakawa noted in an email to her massage therapist that Gene had experienced cold or flu-like symptoms but tested negative for COVID-19. She expressed intentions to postpone an appointment “out of an abundance of caution.”
Investigation Findings
Authorities examined the couple’s home, scouring through the property while finding no evidence of forced entry or suspicious activity. Moreover, security footage from local stores on February 11 and their home’s call history provided additional context.
The investigation was prompted by a recent court directive allowing for the dissemination of previously restricted materials related to the couple’s deaths. The Hackman family had sought to preserve their privacy, hoping to keep certain elements of the case sealed.
Environmental Assessment of the Property
A health assessment conducted by the New Mexico Department of Health found signs of rodents on the Hackman property, specifically, rodent droppings in outbuildings and a nest in an adjacent garage. However, no rodent activity was noted inside their living quarters.
Final Moments
On February 26, 2025, authorities dispatched deputies to the Hackman residence in Santa Fe following reports from maintenance officials regarding their lack of contact. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Gene Hackman, 95, in a mudroom and Betsy Arakawa, 65, in a bathroom adjacent to a space heater. Additionally, an open prescription bottle with scattered pills was found near her.
Next Steps in the Investigation
Following this report, authorities are expected to release more redacted body camera footage from inside the Hackman home, further aiding in the investigation as detectives piece together the events leading to their deaths.
