Gerrit Cole to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Impacting 2024 Yankees Season
NEW YORK – The New York Yankees have announced that pitcher Gerrit Cole will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, effectively ending his 2024 season.
What Led to the Decision
The decision follows Cole’s experience of discomfort during spring training, specifically after his second outing where he noticed issues with his elbow. A medical examination conducted by Dr. Neal ElAttrache from the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles confirmed the necessity for surgery, which is scheduled for Tuesday.
Cole’s Response
Expressing his sentiments on social media, Cole stated, “This isn’t the news any athlete wants to hear, but it’s the necessary next step for my career. I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead.” He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Yankees, stating, “I can’t wait to be back on the mound — stronger than ever.”
Cole’s Background
Since joining the Yankees in 2020 with a nine-year, $324 million contract, Gerrit Cole has been a cornerstone of their pitching staff. His remarkable performance led to him receiving the AL Cy Young Award in 2023, following an impressive season where he posted an 8-5 record and a 3.41 ERA over 17 starts. However, last season was marred by injuries, as Cole did not make his first appearance until June 19 due to prior elbow complications, though he improved in the postseason with a 2.17 ERA across five starts.
Team’s Outlook Without Cole
Yankees manager Aaron Boone remains optimistic about the team’s resilience in the face of Cole’s absence. He remarked, “You’ve got to be able to handle it and deal with it and maneuver. It’s not a death sentence for us by any means, so it’s an opportunity for someone else.”
Boone emphasized that Cole still has much to offer in his career and with the Yankees.
Adjustments to the Pitching Rotation
In light of Cole’s surgery, the Yankees will need to revamp their pitching rotation. Max Fried is now expected to take the lead, joined by Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, and Marcus Stroman. Additionally, Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco are being considered for the fifth starter position.
Other Injury Concerns
The Yankees are also grappling with other injury issues, as AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is projected to be out for a minimum of three months recovering from a strained lat muscle. Furthermore, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton faces an indefinite timeline to return due to tendon pain in both elbows, while infielder DJ LeMahieu is in recovery for a calf strain.
