New York Woman Arrested for Running Illegal Dentistry Operation

NEW YORK – Authorities in Suffolk County have arrested a woman for allegedly conducting unauthorized dental procedures from her residence, lacking any formal training in dentistry. The accused, 55-year-old Yolany Mejia Carranza, is facing three counts of unauthorized practice of a profession.

Details of the Investigation

According to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina, the investigation unfolded after detectives received multiple reports indicating that Carranza had inflicted injuries on several patients. Notably, one incident reportedly resulted in severe nerve damage, leading to a case of partial facial paralysis.

Targeting Vulnerable Communities

Catalina emphasized that Carranza is believed to have specifically targeted the Hispanic community, with a focus on undocumented migrants who may not have health insurance. This demographic is often more susceptible to exploitation in situations involving unauthorized medical practices.

Operational History

Carranza is accused of facilitating her illegal dental practice in a home located in Bay Shore, New York. Furthermore, police suspect that she operated a similar unlicensed dentistry service for approximately eight years at a previous location in Huntington Station.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

During a press conference, Carranza’s attorney, Aaron Wallenstein, stated, “If these [allegations] were true — that she was actually performing dental work — I think three complaints in 10 or 15 years for any dentist is not a bad percentage for what they’re alleging she did.”

Current Status and Next Steps

Carranza was arraigned on March 14 and has since been released. A subsequent court date is scheduled for April 1, where the legal proceedings will continue.

Conclusion and Call for Community Response

Authorities believe there may be more potential victims and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Community safety remains a priority as this case unfolds, highlighting the risks associated with unlicensed medical practices.
