In-N-Out Burger Removes Artificial Colors from Popular Beverages
OAKLAND, California – In a significant move, In-N-Out Burger has decided to eliminate artificial coloring from its strawberry shakes and signature pink lemonade. This decision comes shortly after the FDA signaled a shift towards more natural food coloring alternatives.
Details of the Change
According to company spokesperson Patty Peña, the removal of artificial dyes represents the chain’s commitment to improving product quality. Peña stated, “We have removed artificial coloring from the strawberry shakes and pink lemonade.” In addition to these removals, In-N-Out is also transitioning to a new ketchup that utilizes real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
The Background
This change aligns with recent commentary from FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, who announced on April 22 that the agency plans to phase out petroleum-based color additives by the end of 2026. The FDA aims to encourage voluntary compliance from food manufacturers, suggesting a gradual shift towards natural alternatives.
Health advocates have long campaigned against artificial food dyes, citing concerns that they may contribute to behavioral issues in children. The FDA, however, continues to assert that its approved dyes are safe for consumption, maintaining, “the totality of scientific evidence shows that most children have no adverse effects when consuming foods containing color additives.”
Future Considerations
While the announcement is clear regarding strawberry shakes and pink lemonade, inquiries about potential changes to other In-N-Out products remain unanswered. Additionally, in February 2023, the company announced its relocation of headquarters from Irvine, California, to Tennessee.
