NYPD Officers Involved in Shooting Incident in Brooklyn
NEW YORK – A man is currently in critical condition following a shooting involving NYPD officers in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon.
Incident Overview
The confrontation occurred around 1:49 p.m. at Avenue K, near Utica Avenue. Two detectives, who were in plain clothes and driving an unmarked vehicle, observed an argument between two men and proceeded to intervene.
Upon exiting their car and identifying themselves, the detectives attempted to mediate the situation. It was then that one of the officers noticed that one of the individuals was wielding a box cutter.
Warning Issued
Law enforcement officials stated that multiple commands were given for the man to drop the box cutter. However, he disregarded these warnings and attempted to walk away, re-engaging in the dispute while still holding the weapon.
Escalation and Shooting
As tensions escalated, one of the detectives positioned himself between the armed individual and the other man involved in the argument. Despite this, the suspect continued to approach the detective with the box cutter in hand, closing the distance to just a few feet. In response, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect in the torso.
Aftermath and Medical Response
Immediately following the incident, the detectives called for backup, and uniformed officers provided first aid to the injured man. He was subsequently transported to Kings County Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

According to NYPD officials, the suspect has a history of prior interactions with law enforcement, predominantly concerning mental health issues. The department has reported three incidents involving him in previous years—one in 2018 and two in 2017.
