Yankees Lift Beard Ban as Spring Training Begins
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The New York Yankees have officially kicked off their spring training, marking a significant change in tradition by lifting their longstanding ban on beards.
Spring Training Commences
As pitchers and catchers reported to camp in Tampa, the Yankees initiated their preparations for the upcoming season amid an atmosphere of change and renewal.
Beard Policy Update
Current team owner Hal Steinbrenner announced the repeal of the 49-year-old beard ban on Friday, a policy originally implemented by his father, George Steinbrenner.
“In recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees — spanning several eras — to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy,” Hal Steinbrenner stated.
Steinbrenner explained the decision, noting:
“Ultimately the final decision rests with me, and after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward. It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy.”
Recent Traditions Challenged
Interestingly, just days before this announcement, players received reminders to arrive clean-shaven for photo day. Notable new addition Devin Williams, obtained through a recent trade, had facial hair in his official photograph. Similarly, outfielder Alex Verdugo had to alter his longer hairstyle upon joining the Yankees prior to the 2024 season.
