If proven to be upright, this would signify a significant success for Intuitive Machines. The prior Nova-C lander, Odysseus, which landed in February 2024, unfortunately toppled during its descent; nevertheless, NASA celebrated it as the first American landing on the Moon since 1972.

Athena’s landing site is the furthest south reached by any lunar mission. The unique orientation of the Moon means that many craters in this region are perpetually in shadow, where scientists hypothesize that significant deposits of water ice may be found. Several payloads aboard Athena are dedicated to investigating this ice, which could be crucial for sustaining future human missions with water and fuel supplies.

The IM-2 mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program and comprises scientific investigations spearheaded by partners, including Lonestar Data Holdings, Columbia Sportswear, Nokia, Lunar Outpost, Puli Space, Dymon Co. Ltd., and the German Aerospace Center.

Innovations and Technological Developments

Among Athena’s payloads is a small rover developed by MIT Media Labs, designed to capture three-dimensional images of the lunar surface. These images are expected to be transmitted in real-time, contributing to public engagement with the mission.

Moreover, Athena will facilitate the deployment of two moon vehicles aimed at testing the first cellular network on the lunar surface. Nokia’s Bell Labs has engineered the Lunar Surface Communication System (LSCS), a compact wireless network designed for the Moon’s south pole, which will support communications between the lander and the deployed rovers despite the challenging environment.

Both the Intuitive Machines’ Micro-Nova Hopper, aptly named “Grace,” and Lunar Outpost’s Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform (MAPP) rover will utilize the LSCS to relay key data back to the Athena lander, potentially including images of lunar ice.
