Video Game Console Leads to Arrests in ATM Robbery Case
TEMPE, Ariz. – Authorities in Tempe have successfully linked a video game console to a series of ATM robberies that spanned multiple states, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
The Crime Unfolds
On November 5, 2024, two individuals were captured on surveillance footage robbing an ATM located at a Bank of America in Tempe. The duo seized the opportunity while ATM technicians were on-site fixing the machine, persuading them to leave before taking cash cassettes.
Jessica Ells from the Tempe Police explained, “Money is stored in cassettes that have GPS location data.” Utilizing this GPS data, officers were able to track the cassettes shortly after the theft, leading them to various locations.
Crucial Evidence
Following the initial theft, law enforcement identified and located a rental vehicle linked to the crime, which contained the stolen cassettes as well as a PlayStation 5 console and controller. “Investigators gathered account information from that PS5, which ultimately led them to social media accounts associated with the suspects,” Ells noted.
Additionally, dashcam footage from the getaway vehicle corroborated the suspects’ presence at the crime scene.
The Investigation Expands
The stolen amount from this particular ATM robbery was reported to be nearly $280,000. Throughout the ongoing investigation, law enforcement has reason to believe that the suspects may be connected to similar robberies occurring across different states.
Suspect Identifications
Authorities arrested three individuals in Houston: Maurice Brooks, Micah Lazaro, and Anthony Smith. As of now, two of the suspects have been extradited to Arizona, while one is awaiting extradition on federal charges.
Advice for ATM Users
In light of these events, Ells advised the public to remain vigilant when using ATMs, stating, “Always be aware of your surroundings. Be cautious of anyone who may be following you to your vehicle or home.”
