Vybz Kartel’s Journey: From Prison to Freedom and Beyond
NEW YORK – Adidja Palmer, popularly known as Vybz Kartel, recently emerged from a challenging period marked by a life sentence in a Jamaican prison. After a prolonged battle with the legal system and personal health issues, he has shared his story in an exclusive interview with FOX 5’s Lisa Evers, marking his first public appearance in New York City.
The Legal Struggle
Vybz Kartel was convicted for the 2014 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams, a case that drew significant controversy over its proceedings. After years of legal appeals, the Privy Council, which serves as Jamaica’s highest court, overturned his conviction in early 2024 due to juror misconduct, allowing the Jamaica Court of Appeal to consider a retrial.
Ultimately, they decided against retrying the case, and on July 31, 2024, Kartel was released from prison, marking a significant victory in his long-standing struggle for justice.
Health Challenges During Imprisonment
While incarcerated, Kartel’s health severely deteriorated. He was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a serious autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid. Reflecting on his last six months behind bars, he remarked, “The last six months [inside] were the worst. Like the doctor said—I was literally fading away.” The harsh living conditions, lacking basic amenities such as air conditioning and running water, added to his physical and emotional burden.
Motivation Through Adversity
Kartel credits his perseverance to unwavering faith and the support of his family. He acknowledged the significant role his legal team played in advocating for his freedom. His children, whom he described as a vital source of motivation, were also a constant reminder of his responsibilities, especially during the isolation of COVID lockdowns that left him without personal visits for two years.
A New Chapter
Since his release, Kartel has received significant recognition within the music industry, attending high-profile events such as the 2024 Grammys and being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MOBO Awards in London. Expressing his disbelief over these events, he said, “I have to pinch myself—literally. A month before the red carpet, I was in prison.”
He is also focusing on new music projects and collaborations, including exciting plans with DJ Khaled. “Khaled is a top chef—always cooking,” he commented, hinting at forthcoming music releases.
