On Easter Sunday, a devastating fire erupted in a home located in Jamaica Estates, Queens, resulting in three fatalities and leaving another individual in critical condition, as reported by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

Details of the Fire

The blaze began around 1:30 AM, and it was determined that the home showed no signs of a functioning smoke detector. Additionally, fire officials revealed that exits and stairways were obstructed, complicating evacuation efforts.

Chief John Esposito from the FDNY described the interior of the house, noting that makeshift walls had been constructed that further restricted movement. He stated, “The fire had extended to the second floor and attic and these were all living spaces. There were makeshift walls.”

Furthermore, extension cords were discovered throughout the two-story structure, which can pose a significant fire hazard if overloaded, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International.

Firefighter Response and Casualties

Firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes, but the flames had quickly consumed the upper levels of the house. Eyewitness reports indicated that some residents attempted to escape by jumping from the attic windows.

While four firefighters and an additional four individuals sustained minor injuries during the incident, the situation highlighted serious safety issues within the residence, which was occupied across its various levels—including the attic and cellar.
