Christie Brinkley’s Insightful Memoir on Her Marriage to Billy Joel
A Glimpse into “Uptown Girl”
In a recent exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Christie Brinkley shared details about her upcoming memoir titled “Uptown Girl.” This title pays homage to the famous song by Billy Joel, which he wrote during their relationship.
Marriage Challenges
During her marriage to Joel, which lasted nearly a decade from 1985 to 1994, Brinkley discussed the complexities that led to their separation. In her memoir, she candidly addresses Joel’s struggles with alcoholism, describing it as the “other woman” in their relationship.
“But his drinking was bigger than the both of us—booze was the other woman, and it was beginning to seem that he preferred to be with ‘her’ rather than with me,” Brinkley reflected.
Efforts to Save the Marriage
Brinkley detailed the lengths she went to in an attempt to salvage their marriage. She stated, “I did everything for our marriage, constantly working to make myself, our home, and everything around us into whatever he could possibly want or hope for.” She included various attempts at therapy, saying they sought help from numerous professionals together.
First Encounters and Early Relationship
Brinkley reminisced about how she first met Joel. Interestingly, she shared that both she and his former girlfriend, Elle Macpherson, met Joel on the same evening. “Elle and I met Billy on the same night. I thought I know I want to be friends with this guy forever,” she recalled.
The Impact of Their Daughter
The couple shares a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, and Brinkley admitted that having a child made the decision to end the marriage particularly difficult. “To walk away from Billy was not easy. So it took time, but at a certain point there’s one incident too many, and you just have to have a little self-preservation,” she explained.
Moving On
After her marriage to Joel, Brinkley experienced brief marriages to Richard Taubman and Peter Cook. Joel, meanwhile, was married to Katie Lee from 2004 until 2009 and is currently wed to Alexis Roderick, with whom he has two daughters.
Looking to the Future
Despite past challenges, Brinkley remains optimistic about love. “I find love is the strongest thing in the whole world… If there’s a romantic love that comes along as well, it would be wonderful,” she stated, highlighting her fulfillment with the current love in her life.
