Updated Insights on COVID-19 Experiences Among Americans
WASHINGTON – As we reflect on five years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a recent Gallup poll has shed light on the diverse experiences of Americans regarding the virus. The survey indicates a noteworthy portion of the population believes they have never contracted COVID-19, while others show concern for what may come next.
Understanding the COVID-19 Status of Americans
A significant finding from the Gallup survey reveals that approximately 28% of Americans claim they have never had COVID-19. In contrast, individuals aged 65 and older are the most likely to report having contracted the virus, with 39% stating such. This discrepancy may result from heightened precautions taken by older adults, including increased vaccination rates.

CONCERNS PERSIST ABOUT COVID-19 AND FUTURE PANDEMICS
Despite many Americans feeling a sense of normalcy has returned, a significant portion expresses ongoing concerns about the possibility of another COVID-19 outbreak. The poll highlights that 58% of respondents are worried about experiencing another global pandemic during their lifetime.
When assessing current worries about catching COVID-19, the results show:
- 21% of Americans are either very worried (3%) or somewhat worried (18%) about contracting the virus.
- 40% of those polled stated they are not worried at all.
- Reflecting political divides, 29% of Democrats express worry about COVID-19, in contrast to only 9% of Republicans.
Perceptions of the Pandemic’s End
A majority, or 58%, of Americans believe the pandemic phase is over. This belief is accompanied by unease regarding future health crises. Older adults generally report higher levels of concern compared to younger populations.
Methodology of the Gallup Poll
The data for this report was collected from a probability-based COVID-19 web panel survey conducted by Gallup between February 18-26, reflecting ongoing trends since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
