Utah Woman Prevents Kidnapping with SOS Note at Gas Station
In a harrowing incident on March 8, a woman managed to thwart an alleged kidnapping attempt while at a gas station in southern Utah. The courageous victim discreetly communicated her distress by slipping an SOS note to a bystander, leading to her rescue and the subsequent arrest of her assailant.
The Incident
According to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, the 53-year-old suspect, Epigmenio Bustillos Marquez, was taken into custody following the woman’s alert. Around 1:30 PM, authorities were dispatched to the Cedar Band Travel Plaza, located approximately seven miles southwest of Cedar City, based on reports of a potential kidnapping.
The Woman’s Brave Action
A witness recounted that the victim passed her a handwritten note, indicating that she was in danger and required assistance. After observing the woman enter a white Chevrolet Equinox, which bore Nevada license plates, the witness followed the vehicle onto Interstate 15.
Police Intervention
Law enforcement officers successfully executed a traffic stop on the vehicle. Upon engaging with the woman, deputies noted unusual behavior, prompting further investigation. The driver, identified as Marquez, presented identification from Durango, Mexico, but with a false name and birth date.
Unveiling the Truth
Investigators discovered a second ID card belonging to Marquez, which revealed his actual identity. Despite this evidence, Marquez denied the legitimacy of the identification. The victim disclosed a 25-year relationship with Marquez but noted a concerning change in his demeanor, describing instances of erratic behavior.
The Nature of the Threat
During the ride, Marquez reportedly made serious allegations against the victim, including accusations of infidelity. Instead of taking her to work as she requested, Marquez threatened to transport her to distant locations such as Salt Lake City or Denver. He further escalated the situation by taking her phone and physically assaulting her.
Legal Proceedings
Marquez has been booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility, facing a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault along with several misdemeanors, including assault, providing false information, and interference with communication devices. He is currently being held without bail, awaiting a pretrial hearing.
