New York Proposes ‘Super Speeder’ Legislation for Safer Roads
NEW YORK CITY – In response to a tragic incident involving the loss of a mother and her two children in a speeding-related crash, New York lawmakers are advocating for a new bill known as the “Stop Super Speeders” legislation.
Overview of the Bill
The proposed legislation would mandate that drivers with multiple speeding offenses install a device in their vehicles that limits their speed to the legal limits. Sponsored by State Senator Andrew Gounardes, this initiative aims to significantly reduce speeding-related accidents and enhance public safety on the roads.
“Seventy-five percent of individuals who have their licenses suspended due to reckless driving continue to drive anyway,” Senator Gounardes stated. His push for this bill reflects a growing concern for road safety following the recent fatal crash on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, where the driver was noted to have been speeding with a suspended license.
Technology Implementation
The legislation stipulates the use of advanced technology that physically restricts a vehicle’s speed. Gounardes emphasized the effectiveness of this technology, saying, “I literally cannot go faster than the speed limit. My foot is touching the floor.” He described how the system operates using GPS data, indicating that it is preprogrammed with the speed limits for all roadways.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Despite being proposed two years ago, the “Stop Super Speeders” bill has yet to progress significantly in the New York State legislature. Gounardes remains optimistic that this session, which concludes in mid-June, will see the necessary advancements to push the legislation forward.
Previous implementations of similar technologies in other states suggest a potential path forward, indicating a trend toward stricter measures for repeat offenders to enhance road safety.
