The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced today the addition of 200 electric buses to its fleet, part of the city’s push to modernize public transportation and reduce emissions. The new buses, which will operate on key routes across the five boroughs, are equipped with heating systems designed for cold-weather performance.
“This investment brings us closer to a greener and cleaner transit system,” said Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO. “Electric buses are a win for the environment and for riders.”
The city plans to transition its entire bus fleet to electric vehicles by 2040. The expansion is funded through state and federal grants, with additional support from the city’s Climate Action Fund.
Riders expressed excitement about the quieter, smoother buses, though some raised concerns about reliability during winter storms. The MTA assured the public that the buses had been tested for extreme weather conditions.
