NYC Introduces Real-Time Flood Alert System

Mayor Eric Adams and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) launched a real-time flood alert system today to help New Yorkers prepare for and respond to sudden weather events. The NYC Flood Alert Network uses advanced weather tracking and sensor technology to provide residents with immediate notifications about flooding risks in their area.

The system, accessible via a mobile app and text alerts, will offer updates on flood-prone zones, evacuation routes, and emergency resources. “This is a vital tool to protect lives and property as extreme weather becomes more frequent,” Adams said during a demonstration in Lower Manhattan.

The network is integrated with the city’s existing infrastructure, including subway stations and roadways, to ensure timely updates on closures and disruptions. Public education campaigns will accompany the launch, teaching residents how to use the system and prepare for floods.

Advocacy groups welcomed the initiative but called for more investments in long-term infrastructure upgrades. “Flood alerts are important, but we also need better drainage systems and flood barriers,” said Maritza Silva-Farrell of NYC Climate Action.

The OEM plans to expand the system to include heat and storm surge alerts next year
