Mayor Eric Adams’ Tribute to Nightclub Collapse Victims in the Dominican Republic
NEW YORK – On April 14, 2025, New York City Mayor Eric Adams journeyed to the Dominican Republic to pay his respects to the lives lost in the catastrophic roof collapse at a Santo Domingo nightclub, a tragedy that has claimed over 200 lives.
A Strong Connection Between New York City and the Dominican Community
The visit highlights the deep ties existing between New York City and its Dominican diaspora, which comprises approximately 700,000 individuals—making up 8% of the city’s entire population.
Details of the Tragic Incident
During his visit, Mayor Adams met with local law enforcement and municipal authorities prior to visiting the site of the Jet Set nightclub, where the incident occurred amid a concert on April 7. Rescue efforts have led to 189 individuals being saved, with 12 still hospitalized, including three in critical condition. As per Dominican Republic’s Interior Minister Faride Raful, the confirmed number of fatalities rose from 226 to 231 on the day of Adams’ visit.
Call for Stricter Regulations
Upon his arrival, Mayor Adams was welcomed by Victor D’Aza, president of the Dominican Municipal League, who stressed the necessity for heightened oversight and strict adherence to construction regulations. “This has to be a lesson for more effective supervision, for rigor in compliance with the rules. This is a wake-up call,” D’Aza stated in an interview with The Associated Press.
Ongoing Investigation and Memorial Plans
The investigation into the cause of the roof collapse is still ongoing. Following his visit to the nightclub site, Mayor Adams is scheduled to attend a Mass to further honor the victims.
Context of the Visit
Adams’ trip to the Dominican Republic coincides with his reelection campaign, as he prepares to run as an independent candidate amid recent criticism and a bribery scandal that has drawn attention to his relationship with Republican President Donald Trump.
