Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams celebrated a major milestone in New York’s renewable energy efforts today with the groundbreaking of the state’s first large-scale offshore wind project. The Empire Wind project, located 15 miles off the coast of Long Island, is expected to generate enough power for over 500,000 homes when completed in 2027.
The wind farm will feature 60 turbines and create thousands of jobs during its construction phase, including opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, and operations. “This project cements New York’s position as a leader in the clean energy revolution,” Hochul said during the ceremony.
The project is part of New York’s goal to achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Local officials emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of the wind farm. “This is a win for our economy, our environment, and future generations,” Adams added.
Environmental groups celebrated the groundbreaking as a victory for climate action, while some fishermen raised concerns about potential impacts on marine ecosystems. Project leaders assured stakeholders that measures would be in place to mitigate disruptions.
