NYC’s Summer Streets Returns with Expanded Route

New Yorkers reclaimed the city’s streets today as the annual Summer Streets program returned, featuring an expanded route and new activities. For three consecutive Saturdays in August, nearly eight miles of car-free streets will be open to pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters, stretching from Brooklyn Bridge to East Harlem.

This year’s program includes fitness classes, outdoor art installations, pop-up performances, and children’s play zones. Food vendors and local artisans lined the streets, offering everything from gourmet coffee to handmade jewelry. “Summer Streets is about celebrating our city in a way that’s fun, healthy, and sustainable,” said NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

One of the highlights was the debut of a “wellness zone” near Union Square, offering free yoga sessions, meditation workshops, and health screenings. “This is such a unique way to enjoy the city,” said Mia Johnson, a Brooklyn resident who biked the entire route with her friends.

The event has drawn praise for promoting sustainability and reducing car dependence. Environmental groups, including Transportation Alternatives, used the occasion to call for permanent car-free zones in parts of Manhattan. “Summer Streets shows us what’s possible,” said Danny Harris, the group’s executive director.

Summer Streets will continue on August 10 and August 17, with additional activities planned for the final weekend.
