A Rule Change Worth Noting

This week, NFL owners sanctioned a pivotal proposal from the Competition Committee, approving the inclusion of statistics from the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) into the official NFL record books. These records encompass player, coach, and team achievements from the AAFC, which was active from 1946 until its dissolution in 1949.

Historically, the AAFC competed alongside the NFL until the former folded, with teams like the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and the original Baltimore Colts transitioning into the NFL in 1950. However, the Colts’ original franchise had a brief history, disbanding after just one season.

Recovered Records and Their Impact

Previously, the AAFC published a statistical supplement after its last season, highlighting various records, although comprehensive scoresheets were inaccessible. Fortunately, these documents have recently been recovered. Following consultations with the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Elias Sports Bureau, the statistics are now officially integrated into NFL records.

Otto Graham’s Remarkable Legacy

With this rule change, Otto Graham, a Hall of Fame quarterback, has been recognized for his achievements during the AAFC. The Browns captured four championships from 1946 to 1949 under his leadership, and Graham’s existing three NFL championships in 1950, 1954, and 1955 bring his total to seven. Consequently, he now shares this remarkable championship record with Brady.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965, Graham’s legacy includes passing for 23,584 yards, 174 touchdown passes, and 44 rushing touchdowns before his passing in 2003 at the age of 82.

Brady’s Unmatched Career

Tom Brady, who retired in 2023, is known for his numerous achievements, including being the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards with 89,214 and 649 touchdown passes. His career also boasts 15 Pro Bowl selections, showcasing his exceptional talent on the field.

Interestingly, both Brady and Graham participated in 10 championship games, with identical records of seven wins and three losses. Nevertheless, Brady retains the unique distinction of having the most Super Bowl appearances and victories, a testament to his legendary status, as noted that the Super Bowl only commenced in 1967.
