The dire wolf, a creature that became a cultural icon through its representation in the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” has recently made headlines as scientists in the U.S. have succeeded in bringing this extinct species back to life via genetic engineering. More than 12,000 years after the dire wolf vanished from existence, this groundbreaking project marks the first successful example of de-extinction.
The Birth of Dire Wolf Pups

Physical Characteristics
Compared to their closest living relatives, gray wolves, dire wolves were notably larger, sometimes exceeding these canines by as much as 25%. Their physical traits included a broader head, thick fur, and a more powerful jaw. As apex predators known as “hyper-carnivores,” their diet primarily consisted of large ungulates such as horses and bison.
Genetic Engineering Process
The team at Colossal Biosciences investigated specific traits of dire wolves by analyzing ancient DNA from fossilized remains—particularly a 13,000-year-old tooth from Ohio and a skull fragment estimated to be 72,000 years old from Idaho. Utilizing CRISPR technology, they modified the genetic code of a living gray wolf’s cells at 20 distinct sites, followed by transplanting this genetic material into egg cells derived from domestic dogs for embryo development.
After a gestation period of 62 days with the embryos carried by domestic dog surrogates, the genetically modified pups were born and are currently healthy and robust, expected to reach around 140 pounds as adults.
Conservation and Welfare Measures
The pups are now residing in a secure, large habitat certified by the American Humane Society, with continuous monitoring by trained staff, security personnel, and drones to ensure their well-being. According to Colossal’s chief animal care expert, Matt James, while the pups can mimic some behaviors, they will lack the critical learning experiences from wild dire wolves necessary for hunting and survival skills.
