Gang Crackdown in Suffolk County
LONG ISLAND – Authorities in Suffolk County have made significant strides in tackling gang-related violence with the arrest of nearly 30 alleged gang members and associates. This development follows extensive investigations into violent street gangs operating in the region.
Recent Indictments Unveiled
On May 1, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced details of two separate indictments stemming from lengthy investigations into organized crime:
- Mak Balla Family Indictment: A substantial 168-count indictment has charged 22 alleged members and associates linked to the Mak Balla Family and its affiliated factions known as “4Eva Rich” and “Real Ni**az Only.” This indictment encompasses incidents over a four-year period, detailing 17 shootings, three armed robberies, the recovery of 22 illegal firearms, and more than 40 drug sales.
- 9-Trey Bloods Indictment: A separate indictment involving six alleged members of the 9-Trey Bloods includes a New York State prison inmate accused of orchestrating a shooting-for-hire from behind bars, resulting in a total of 23 criminal charges.
Background of the Investigations
The inquiry into the Mak Balla Family began in early 2022, revealing a troubling pattern of organized violence dating back to January 2021. Investigators have connected gang members to a series of shootings throughout 2023 and early 2024, including incidents occurring during a Black Friday altercation.
In parallel, the investigation into the 9-Trey Bloods is associated with multiple shootings and weapon arrests between early to late November 2024, alongside a reported shooting-for-hire plot allegedly orchestrated by Joseph Baker from prison.
Prosecutors’ Allegations
According to prosecutors, the Mak Balla Family utilized violent tactics and drug trafficking to assert dominance over rival Blood factions, demonstrating both retaliatory and preemptive aggression. The gang is said to have a structured hierarchy and enforced loyalty through written regulations.
The indictment against the 9-Trey Bloods underscores similar themes, detailing organized shootings, coordinated violence, and shared weaponry across jurisdictions.
Statements from Officials
District Attorney Tierney highlighted the significance of these investigations, stating, “These comprehensive investigations and consequential indictments are exactly what I promised the people of Suffolk County. We will work tirelessly to ensure that any violent organization operating here in Suffolk County will be taken down.”
Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. commended the intelligence gathered within correctional facilities, noting its critical role in mitigating violence and apprehending dangerous individuals. Riverhead Police Chief Ed Frost also emphasized the dedication of law enforcement to reduce violence and hold perpetrators accountable.
