Remembering Halyna Hutchins

During its world premiere in Poland last year, a moment of silence was held in remembrance of Halyna Hutchins, the late cinematographer who tragically lost her life during the film’s production in 2021.

Director Joel Souza shared that while the loss was profound, Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, requested the completion of the film, even taking on the role of executive producer.

“It was important to him that the people who knew and loved Halyna get to see her final work,” Souza noted, indicating a commitment to honoring her contributions.

Incident Overview

In October 2021, Hutchins was fatally shot on set when Baldwin discharged a prop gun during rehearsal. The incident occurred while Baldwin was demonstrating a specific action involving the revolver, following a necessary adjustment due to lighting conditions.

Souza recalled the moment, describing it as hearing a “whip and then a loud pop,” followed by Hutchins collapsing in front of him. Immediate medical assistance was provided, and she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Legal Developments

Baldwin, initially charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, saw the case dismissed in July 2024 due to law enforcement and prosecutorial misconduct, including the withholding of evidence. This evidence was related to ammunition discovered at the sheriff’s office deemed irrelevant by prosecutors.

Despite the dismissal of criminal charges, Baldwin still faces civil lawsuits from Hutchins’ family and crew members, while settling a lawsuit with Hutchins’ widower last year.

Repercussions for Crew Members

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors highlighted multiple safety violations leading to the incident.

Gutierrez-Reed expressed her regret during sentencing, stating she lacked proper resources and support on set, emphasizing, “I tried to do my best.”
