WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Army commenced its 250th birthday celebrations on June 7, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s military history. The week-long festivities, themed “This We’ll Defend,” include ceremonies, parades, and educational events across the country, honoring the Army’s legacy since its establishment in 1775. The celebrations aim to recognize the service and sacrifices of soldiers past and present, reinforcing the Army’s enduring commitment to national defense.
A Week of Commemorative Events
The celebrations began with the opening of a new exhibit at the National Museum of the United States Army titled “Call to Arms: The Soldier and the Revolutionary War.” This exhibit features rare Revolutionary War artifacts and offers family-friendly activities, including uniform displays and storytelling sessions. The exhibit will remain open through June 2027, providing an educational experience for visitors.
On June 11, the Army hosted the Twilight Tattoo at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia. This event showcased ceremonial units and was livestreamed on the Army’s social media platforms, allowing a broader audience to participate in the festivities.
Grand Military Parade in Washington, D.C.
The highlight of the anniversary celebrations is the grand military parade scheduled for June 14 in Washington, D.C. This event will feature over 6,600 soldiers, more than 150 military vehicles, and 50 aircraft, including modern helicopters and historical planes. The parade route will span Constitution Avenue NW between 15th and 23rd Streets, with guests invited to view the procession from the Washington Monument Grounds.
The parade will also include a reenlistment ceremony for 250 Army soldiers and a parachute demonstration by the Golden Knights. The day’s events will conclude with a concert and a fireworks display, celebrating the Army’s rich history and its role in national defense.
Nationwide Participation and Community Engagement
Beyond the nation’s capital, Army installations and communities across the country are hosting events to commemorate the 250th anniversary. Fort Bragg, for example, is organizing a U.S. Army 250th Birthday Gala on June 18, bringing together military leaders, service members, veterans, and local residents. Similarly, Fort Benning hosted an Army 250 5K race on June 7, encouraging community participation and physical fitness.
