Viewing the Eclipse in New York City

Mike Woods, Meteorologist with FOX 5 NY, suggests that while there is potential for visibility, the cloud cover could be a challenge. “There’s a chance you could see at least a little bit of this blood moon lunar eclipse,” he stated. However, he cautioned that cloud conditions could interfere throughout the night.

Woods noted, “It will still be pretty cloudy at midnight, but we’ll have to wait and see if we get lucky for the blood moon or eclipse.” Spotting the eclipse may require patience and a bit of luck as clouds may come and go.

Understanding the Blood Worm Moon

This particular lunar eclipse coincides with March’s full moon, known as the Worm Moon. The name is derived from the earthworms that emerge during the warming spring soil. When the full moon occurs alongside a total lunar eclipse, it is referred to as a “Blood Worm Moon,” highlighting its unique coloring.

The peak illumination of the Worm Moon will occur just before 3 AM on March 14, but it will appear full or nearly full from March 12 through March 16.
