The New York Yankees halted their six-game losing streak with a hard-fought 6–4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday, July 6, salvaging the final game of the 2025 Subway Series at Citi Field. The win provided a much-needed morale boost for the Yankees, who had dropped 16 of their previous 22 games and were in danger of being swept by their crosstown rivals.

The game began as a pitchers’ duel, with Yankees ace Max Fried and Mets reliever Chris Devenski keeping the scoreboard blank through the first two innings. The Yankees broke through in the third when Austin Wells launched his 13th home run of the season off Zach Pop, giving the Yankees a 1–0 lead. They added two more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on a leadoff double by Giancarlo Stanton and RBI contributions from Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu.

Aaron Judge extended the Yankees’ lead to 5–0 in the fifth inning with a two-run homer, his 33rd of the season, off Mets left-hander Brandon Waddell. The Mets responded in the bottom of the fourth, with Francisco Lindor driving in two runs to cut the deficit to 5–2.

Fried, who entered the game with an 11–2 record, allowed three earned runs on six hits over five innings before being pulled in the sixth after hitting Brandon Nimmo with a pitch. The Mets seized the opportunity, loading the bases and scoring two runs to narrow the Yankees’ lead to 5–4. However, the Yankees’ bullpen held firm, with Tim Hill delivering 1⅓ scoreless innings and Devin Williams closing out the game with a perfect ninth inning.

A pivotal moment came in the seventh inning when Cody Bellinger made a spectacular shoestring catch on a sinking line drive by Juan Soto, doubling off Lindor at first base to end the Mets’ rally. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it “probably our play of the year so far,” highlighting its significance in preserving the team’s lead.

The Mets, who had won four straight games entering the finale, showed resilience despite being forced into a bullpen game due to injuries in their starting rotation. Manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected in the ninth inning for disputing a called third strike on Luis Torrens but praised his team’s effort, stating, “It was a hell of a series. Even on a day like today, the guys fought back, we got down and they kept fighting.”

The victory improved the Yankees’ record to 49–39, while the Mets fell to 50–39. The two teams split the six-game Subway Series, with each winning three games. The Yankees now look to build on this win as they prepare to host the Seattle Mariners after an off-day, aiming to regain their footing in the American League East race.
