John Jay Claims Championship Victory Over Baruch
NEW YORK CITY – An electric atmosphere filled the Arc Arena in Chelsea as John Jay College emerged victorious against Baruch College in a thrilling CUNY championship showdown on Friday night.
Support from Young Fans
Among the fans in attendance was a dedicated group of young athletes from the Steady Buckets basketball program, who came to cheer for their coach and team captain, Dylan Minnick. Known affectionately as “Coach Dylan,” Minnick has played an instrumental role in nurturing young talent within the program.
About Steady Buckets
Steady Buckets is a community-focused initiative that offers free basketball coaching clinics for children throughout New York City, running daily to support and develop young athletes.
Minnick, who himself grew up participating in this program, has taken on the role of coach to give back to the community that shaped him. Mackey Bergman, Founder and Director of Steady Buckets, expressed the significance of community involvement, stating, “All these little kids cheering for him. That was him. Now he’s out there playing at a high level trying to go to the NCAA tournament. He’s got hundreds of kids supporting him. It doesn’t get better than that for community basketball experience, you can’t beat it.”
Community Impact and Player Development
The night was about more than just the competition on the court; it highlighted the importance of community support and mentorship in youth sports. Parents and peers lauded Minnick’s leadership qualities, emphasizing the positive influence he has as both a coach and a player.
One parent shared, “Coach Dylan of the Bearcats has been coaching my son for like the last two years. It’s amazing. He’s teaching them how to be leaders, and he’s showing himself as a leader on the court.”
Young players from the Steady Buckets program also chimed in, expressing their admiration. “He’s so inspiring, and he just inspires me so much,” said one young player. “I love watching him play, and I’ve learned so much from watching him.”
Game Summary and Spirit of Sportsmanship
Despite the Bearcats’ loss in the championship game, the evening encapsulated the essence of sportsmanship and community spirit. The team, which has previously held the title of CUNY champions, aimed for their fourth consecutive trip to the Division III NCAA tournament, showcasing their determination and talent.
Minnick reflected on the importance of giving back, stating, “I’m just really feeling like I’m giving back to these kids. I grew up in the program since I was eight years old, and I just feel like I’m giving it back, and I feel amazing to get the love and support from them.”
