On a somber Friday, family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers gathered at the Cathedral Basilica Roman Catholic Church in Newark to say their final goodbyes to Detective Joseph Azcona. The 26-year-old officer, who was shot and killed while on duty, received a posthumous promotion to sergeant during the emotional ceremony.
Tragic Incident Details
Detective Azcona was killed in the line of duty last week when he and another officer were shot while responding to a situation. According to authorities, the officers were ambushed shortly after arriving in their vehicle. Sadly, Azcona was pronounced dead after being taken to University Hospital. His partner remains in critical condition; however, their name has not been disclosed.
In connection with Azcona’s murder, a 14-year-old boy has been apprehended and charged with both murder and attempted murder. Officials are currently investigating how the minor obtained a firearm and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
A Community in Mourning
The funeral was attended by dignitaries from various public safety agencies, reflecting the tragic loss felt throughout the community. Mourners included local officials from Newark and surrounding municipalities, uniting in remembrance of the fallen officer and the sacrifice he made for his city.
As the community processes this loss, questions remain about the broader implications of youth violence and access to firearms.
