The Concept Behind the Event
The idea for this vibrant gathering originated from Harry Whelchel, who envisioned a karaoke night enriched by the extraordinary talents of Broadway performers. This inspiration struck him during a casual company karaoke event.
Bringing the Idea to Life
After experiencing an unforgettable evening of musical talent, Whelchel learned from a performer that such an event rarely occurs. “In the days after, I said this was amazing as somebody new to the city,” Whelchel recalled. “I bet you guys get booked to do this all the time, and she said twice in five years.”
His passion ignited when he encountered Chelsea Turbin, a Broadway performer known for her work in “Little Shop of Horrors.” She expressed excitement about the potential of combining karaoke with Broadway talent, stating, “Does this exist? Instantly my brain just exploded, and I was like, ‘no it does not exist yet.’”
With enthusiasm from Turbin and other talented performers with engaging stage presence, the concept rapidly gained traction. Within just five days, Whelchel had garnered interest from approximately 300 individuals eager to participate in the karaoke extravaganza.
What to Expect on Karaoke Night
Karaoke night at Baby Grand has grown into a beloved event attracting diverse audiences from across New York City. Participants are invited to join in and sing their favorite Broadway classics alongside seasoned performers.
As Whelchel describes, “The guests get to pick the songs, and then they do duets with them, they do harmonies, they do backup. Sometimes they do group songs, and everyone can sing along.” This interactive format creates a welcoming atmosphere where guests can celebrate their love for musical theater.

Performers, like Turbin, find joy in utilizing their vocal talents during off-nights from their usual shows. “I get to be singing on a Monday night when otherwise I wouldn’t, or I would be doing some other flexible side gig,” she explains.
