Crocodile and Alligator Clash Captivates Visitors in Everglades
In a remarkable display of nature’s fierce competition, a crocodile and an alligator were recently observed in a battle on a sidewalk within Everglades National Park. This rare encounter took place on March 19 and drew the attention of onlookers, many of whom captured the event on video.
Witness Accounts of the Encounter
The spectacle was recorded by Taylor Bonachea, whose footage reveals the two reptiles engaging in an intense struggle characterized by snapping jaws, biting, and hissing. Close to the Shark Valley Observation Tower, spectators could be heard reacting with gasps as the drama unfolded before their eyes.

Reason Behind the Brawl
According to Bonachea, the confrontation likely stemmed from a dispute over prime basking territory. “The alligator goes into the water and leaves the immediate vicinity in defeat, and the croc gets her nice sunny spot to bask in the sun,” Bonachea remarked to Storyful, the social media licensing agency that facilitated the video sharing.
The Ecosystem of South Florida
South Florida is unique in the natural world as it is the only region where the American crocodile and American alligator coexist in the wild, as noted by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Understanding the Differences
In recognizing these two reptiles, it’s essential to note their physical differences: alligators possess a more U-shaped snout, while crocodiles are characterized by a sharper, V-shaped snout. Additionally, alligators are typically darker in color, appearing black, compared to the lighter grayish-brown of crocodiles.
