In a remarkable display of nature’s fierce competition, a crocodile and an alligator were recently observed in a battle on a sidewalk within Everglades National Park. This rare encounter took place on March 19 and drew the attention of onlookers, many of whom captured the event on video.

According to Bonachea, the confrontation likely stemmed from a dispute over prime basking territory. “The alligator goes into the water and leaves the immediate vicinity in defeat, and the croc gets her nice sunny spot to bask in the sun,” Bonachea remarked to Storyful, the social media licensing agency that facilitated the video sharing.
