Harlem, NY — July 16, 2024 — The Apollo Theater, a cultural icon and historic landmark in Harlem, celebrated its 100th anniversary today with a star-studded gala that brought together artists, historians, and community leaders. The event paid tribute to the theater’s legacy as a cradle of African American culture and a launchpad for countless legendary performers.
The celebration included live performances by artists such as Alicia Keys, John Legend, and Stevie Wonder, as well as a tribute to past Apollo legends like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin. “The Apollo is more than a theater—it’s a symbol of resilience, creativity, and the soul of Harlem,” said Apollo CEO Michelle Blake.
A newly unveiled exhibit chronicling the theater’s history, from its opening in 1924 to its role in the Civil Rights Movement and its influence on modern music, drew large crowds. Visitors marveled at memorabilia, including costumes worn by iconic performers and rare photographs of historic shows.
Local businesses in Harlem also joined in the celebration, offering special events and discounts. Community leaders emphasized the importance of preserving the Apollo’s legacy for future generations. “The Apollo’s story is Harlem’s story, and Harlem’s story is America’s story,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman.
The centennial gala raised over $5 million for the Apollo Foundation, which supports arts education and emerging talent. The night concluded with a spectacular performance by Beyoncé, bringing the audience to its feet and cementing the Apollo’s role as a cultural beacon.
