New York City — Harlem’s iconic Apollo Theater celebrated its centennial on Friday with a star-studded gala honoring its rich history as a cultural and musical institution. The evening featured performances by Alicia Keys, John Legend, and a surprise appearance by Beyoncé, who paid tribute to the theater’s role in launching the careers of countless artists.
The Apollo, which opened its doors in 1924, has been a cornerstone of Harlem’s cultural identity, hosting legendary performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, and Prince. The centennial celebration highlighted the theater’s ongoing mission to support emerging talent through programs like Amateur Night and the Apollo Music Café.
“This is more than a theater—it’s a movement,” said Jonelle Procope, President of the Apollo Theater Foundation. “For 100 years, the Apollo has been a beacon for creativity, resilience, and community.”
The gala also included the unveiling of a new digital archive, featuring rare footage and interviews that chronicle the theater’s storied past. Harlem residents and visitors can access the archive online, as well as through an interactive exhibit at the Apollo.
For Harlem native Marcus Ellis, the Apollo’s centennial is a deeply personal milestone. “This theater represents the soul of Harlem,” Ellis said. “It’s where history was made and where the next generation will continue to shine.”
