New York City has officially completed the Logan Fountain development, a transformative $214 million affordable housing project located in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn. This 13-story, 343-unit mixed-use building is the result of a collaborative effort between the city and state governments, aimed at addressing the city’s ongoing housing crisis. The project repurposes a former gas station site into a vibrant community offering a mix of affordable, supportive, and transitional housing options.
A Collaborative Effort to Address Housing Needs
The Logan Fountain development is a joint venture involving the New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), the New York City Department of Social Services (DSS), and the New York City Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the project’s completion on May 13, 2025, emphasizing its significance in providing stable housing solutions for vulnerable populations. Governor Hochul highlighted the state’s commitment to building more housing to address the crisis, stating, “New Yorkers deserve a safe, stable, and affordable home.” Mayor Adams echoed this sentiment, noting that the project is a testament to the power of collaboration between city and state governments in tackling pressing issues.
Diverse Housing Options to Meet Community Needs
Logan Fountain offers a total of 343 residential units, with 173 designated as affordable housing and 169 as transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness. The affordable units are available to households earning up to 70% of the area median income, providing much-needed options for low-income families. The transitional housing units, operated by HELP USA, offer critical support services, including clinical care, employment counseling, and housing placement assistance, to help families achieve long-term stability.
Comprehensive Support Services for Residents
In addition to providing housing, Logan Fountain integrates supportive services to assist residents in maintaining stable housing and achieving self-sufficiency. The 105 supportive housing units are managed by The Jericho Project and include services such as case management, career counseling, and mental health support. These services are designed to help residents overcome challenges and build a foundation for a better future.
Sustainable Design and Community Amenities
The development incorporates sustainable design features, including rooftop solar panels, a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heating and cooling system, and ENERGY STAR® appliances, aligning with the city’s goals for energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. Residents will also have access to a range of amenities, such as an outdoor courtyard, children’s play area, fitness space, and nearly 8,000 square feet of retail space along Atlantic Avenue, contributing to the neighborhood’s economic vitality.
A Model for Future Housing Initiatives
Logan Fountain serves as a model for future affordable housing developments in New York City, demonstrating how underutilized urban spaces can be transformed into thriving communities. The project’s success underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the city’s housing challenges and providing equitable solutions for all residents. As the city continues to grapple with housing shortages and rising costs, initiatives like Logan Fountain are crucial in ensuring that affordable housing remains accessible to those who need it most.
