NYC Announces Expansion of Electric Bus Fleet

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) revealed plans today to add 500 electric buses to its fleet by 2027, a major step toward the city’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The announcement was made at the MTA’s Queens Village Depot, where the first batch of new electric buses is already in operation.
“This is a game-changer for public transit in New York City,” said Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO. “These buses are cleaner, quieter, and more reliable, and they’re going to make a real difference in reducing air pollution.”
The city currently operates 75 electric buses, but officials say the expansion will significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by vehicle pollution. Priority will be given to deploying the buses in areas like the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn.
Environmental groups applauded the move, calling it a victory for climate justice. “Low-income communities and communities of color have borne the brunt of transit-related pollution for too long,” said Maritza Silva-Farrell, executive director of ALIGN, a climate advocacy group.
Critics, however, raised concerns about the high upfront costs and the need for additional charging infrastructure. The MTA plans to invest in new depots equipped with fast-charging stations to support the expanded fleet.
The electric bus initiative is part of a broader $1.1 billion investment in green infrastructure, funded through federal grants and state contributions. Officials say the program will create hundreds of jobs in manufacturing and maintenance.
