New York City — New York City officials launched a citywide crackdown on illegal short-term rentals yesterday, issuing fines to property owners violating the city’s strict Airbnb regulations. The enforcement sweep targeted hundreds of listings that failed to comply with laws requiring hosts to register their properties and limit rentals to a maximum of 30 days.
“Illegal rentals drive up housing costs and harm neighborhoods,” said Mayor Eric Adams. The city has fined noncompliant hosts nearly $2 million since the rules went into effect last year.
Critics argue the laws are too restrictive and hurt legitimate hosts, but housing advocates maintain the crackdown is essential to combat the city’s housing shortage.
