The NYPD has begun using artificial intelligence to analyze gun crime patterns in real time, part of a broader effort to curb rising gun violence in the city. The new system, developed with private tech firms, uses data from ShotSpotter sensors, crime reports, and surveillance footage to identify hotspots and predict potential incidents.
“This technology gives us the tools to prevent crime before it happens,” said Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell. The AI system also provides officers with detailed insights into trends, helping them allocate resources more effectively.
Civil rights advocates have raised concerns about potential bias and privacy violations, urging transparency in how the system is deployed. The NYPD has pledged to audit the system regularly and consult with community leaders to address any issues.
Early results from the pilot program in the Bronx and Brooklyn show a 20% decrease in shootings compared to the same period last year.
