Bronx, NY — July 28, 2024 — The Bronx became the epicenter of Caribbean culture this weekend as it hosted New York City’s first-ever Caribbean Film Festival at the newly renovated Paradise Theater. The festival featured over 50 films from across the Caribbean diaspora, highlighting stories of resilience, heritage, and creativity.
The event kicked off with the premiere of Islands of Fire, a documentary about the volcanic eruptions in St. Vincent and their impact on local communities. The film was followed by a lively panel discussion with filmmakers and activists. “This festival is a celebration of the Caribbean’s rich storytelling tradition,” said festival founder Rochelle Pierre.
Audiences were treated to a diverse lineup, including comedies, dramas, and experimental films from countries like Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic. Food vendors offered Caribbean cuisine, and live performances by steel pan bands and calypso artists added to the festive atmosphere.
Local leaders praised the festival for its role in elevating Caribbean voices and fostering cultural exchange. “The Bronx has always been a hub for Caribbean culture, and this festival is a testament to that legacy,” said Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
The festival concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding filmmakers. Organizers expressed hope that the event would become an annual tradition, bringing even more visibility to Caribbean cinema and culture in New York.
