Brooklyn’s Navy Yard was abuzz with activity today as the borough hosted the inaugural New York Food Sustainability Summit, drawing chefs, farmers, and policymakers from across the state. The event highlighted innovations in sustainable agriculture, plant-based diets, and food waste reduction.
“This summit is about creating a healthier, more sustainable food system for all New Yorkers,” said event organizer Maria Lopez. Panel discussions ranged from urban farming initiatives to the environmental impact of restaurant supply chains.
Participants also enjoyed tastings from local chefs who specialize in sustainable cooking. Among the standout dishes was a mushroom-based “steak” that won praise for its taste and low carbon footprint.
The summit’s success has sparked calls for making it an annual event, cementing Brooklyn’s role as a leader in food sustainability.
