New York City Mayor Eric Adams stirred controversy on Sunday when he publicly opposed calls for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict, aligning his stance with more hardline positions in Washington. Speaking at an event commemorating Jewish Heritage Month, Adams stated, “We must remain steadfast in our resolve to bring the hostages home and ensure Israel’s security.”
The mayor’s comments come as New York, home to the largest Jewish and Palestinian communities in the U.S., has seen a wave of protests from both sides of the conflict. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside City Hall, accusing Adams of ignoring civilian casualties in Gaza. Meanwhile, pro-Israel groups expressed gratitude for his unequivocal support of Israel.
The mayor’s stance has drawn criticism from progressive members of the City Council, including Tiffany Cabán, who called his remarks “tone-deaf” and urged for a more balanced approach. Political analysts suggest Adams’ position may alienate parts of his base while solidifying support among more conservative and pro-Israel constituents.
