The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced expanded late-night transit services to accommodate the surge in holiday travelers attending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day festivities. Dubbed “Holiday Express,” the initiative includes additional subway trains, extended bus routes, and special Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road services for churchgoers and holiday revelers.
At a press conference in Grand Central Terminal, MTA Chair Janno Lieber emphasized the importance of seamless transportation during the holidays. “New Yorkers shouldn’t have to worry about getting where they need to go this season. Whether it’s midnight mass, a family gathering, or a holiday party, we’re here to make it easier.”
The program also includes free transfers between select train and bus lines during peak travel hours, as well as increased staffing to assist passengers. The initiative aims to reduce congestion on major routes and provide safer travel options during one of the busiest times of the year.
Passengers welcomed the added convenience, particularly for late-night travelers. “It’s such a relief to know I can get home safely after Christmas Eve mass,” said Diana Morales, a Queens resident. “The free transfer is a nice bonus.”
City officials collaborated with the NYPD to enhance security at transit hubs and along key routes, ensuring a safe and festive experience for all riders. The MTA plans to assess the program’s success and consider similar expansions for other major holidays.
