New York City unveiled its largest ice skating rink today at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, drawing thousands of visitors for the grand opening. The state-of-the-art facility, named “Winter Wonderland on Ice,” spans 40,000 square feet and features a main skating rink, a separate rink for beginners, and an area dedicated to ice hockey and figure skating lessons.
Mayor Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, and Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasizing the project’s focus on community engagement and accessibility. “This rink is not just a new attraction; it’s a space for families, friends, and neighbors to create lasting memories,” Adams said. “Brooklyn deserves world-class amenities, and this delivers.”
The $50 million project, funded through city and state grants, features eco-friendly design elements, including a solar-powered cooling system and LED lighting throughout the facility. Officials highlighted the rink’s commitment to sustainability, making it one of the most energy-efficient skating venues in the region.
The opening day festivities included free skating sessions, live music from local bands, and food trucks offering holiday treats like hot chocolate and roasted chestnuts. Families expressed excitement about the rink’s potential to become a year-round community hub. “This is such a fantastic addition to Brooklyn,” said Sarah Harris, a Park Slope resident who attended with her children. “It’s the perfect way to spend a winter afternoon.”
In addition to public skating, the rink will host themed nights, including family skate nights, disco on ice, and holiday movie screenings. Seasonal passes and discounted rates for students and seniors are available, ensuring accessibility for all New Yorkers.
The rink will operate through late March and reopen in the summer with roller skating and community events, further solidifying its role as a multi-seasonal destination.
