New York City hospitals reported a spike in winter-related injuries following the recent snowstorm, with hundreds of cases of slips, falls, and frostbite treated in emergency rooms over the past two days. The Department of Health urged residents to exercise caution while walking on icy sidewalks and to dress appropriately for cold temperatures.
“Simple steps like wearing sturdy footwear and using salt on walkways can prevent many of these injuries,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. Hospitals also noted an increase in cold-related illnesses, particularly among the city’s homeless population.
Advocacy groups called for expanded outreach to vulnerable residents, emphasizing the importance of warming centers and mobile medical units. The city pledged additional resources, with shelters and warming centers remaining open 24/7 throughout the week.
