TSA Gears Up for Record-Breaking 18.5 Million Air Travelers Over Fourth of July Holiday

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for one of the busiest air travel periods in recent memory, expecting to screen more than 18.5 million passengers between Tuesday, July 1, and Monday, July 7. The Independence Day rush will likely peak on Sunday, July 6, when nearly 2.9 million travelers are projected to pass through airport security checkpoints.

The surge follows a new agency milestone: on Sunday, June 22, TSA officers screened nearly 3.1 million passengers, the highest single-day total in TSA history. The uptick reflects a strong summer travel season, driven by robust consumer demand, favorable airfares, and the appeal of extended holiday breaks.

“TSA continues to work closely with our industry partners to ensure our airport security checkpoints are fully staffed and prepared to handle the heavy rush of traffic,” said TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill in a public statement. “We are deploying technologies and procedures to improve security and enhance the passenger experience, including for families. We ask travelers to pack their patience, especially during peak travel days, as we work to provide maximum hospitality.”

Expanded Staffing and Travel Efficiency Measures

To manage the sharp rise in passenger volume, TSA has increased staffing at major airports and expanded the use of expedited screening processes. Officials urge travelers to arrive early—typically two hours before domestic flights and three hours for international routes—and to monitor airport and airline notifications for updates.

TSA PreCheck® continues to be a key tool in reducing checkpoint wait times. Travelers enrolled in the program benefit from dedicated lanes, no requirement to remove shoes, belts, or light jackets, and simplified procedures. Children 12 and under may accompany a PreCheck-enrolled parent or guardian without restriction, making it particularly advantageous for families traveling during the holiday.

REAL ID Enforcement Now Active

As of May 7, 2025, TSA requires travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification at security checkpoints. Accepted forms include a state-issued driver’s license or ID card with a star marking, or a valid U.S. passport. According to TSA data, approximately 94% of travelers have adopted REAL ID-compliant credentials, a promising sign as the agency ramps up enforcement.

TSA’s Top Travel Tips for a Smooth Holiday Experience

To ensure a seamless journey, TSA recommends the following guidelines:

  • Arrive Early: Expect longer lines during the holiday period and plan accordingly to prevent last-minute stress.
  • Pack Smart: Start with an empty bag to avoid packing prohibited items. Travelers should review the TSA’s list of restricted items, particularly regarding liquids and sharp objects.
  • Declare Firearms Properly: Firearms must be unloaded, stored in a locked, hard-sided container, and declared at the airline check-in counter. They are strictly prohibited in carry-on luggage.
  • Use TSA Resources: Passengers can get real-time travel assistance by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872) or by messaging via social media. Travelers with medical conditions or disabilities should contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before travel at (855) 787-2227 for personalized support.

With a record number of Americans taking to the skies this Independence Day, TSA’s readiness plan aims to balance safety and efficiency, offering travelers the support and services needed to navigate the holiday rush.
