NYC Launches Gun Buyback Program Following Spike in Violence

In response to a recent surge in gun violence, the NYPD and the Mayor’s Office launched a new gun buyback program today, offering up to $500 in prepaid gift cards and iPads in exchange for firearms. The program, held at churches and community centers across the five boroughs, aims to remove illegal guns from the streets and reduce violent crime.

The initiative is part of a broader anti-violence strategy that includes increased investment in community outreach and youth mentorship programs. “Every gun off the street is a step toward a safer New York City,” said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell during a press conference in Brownsville, Brooklyn, one of the neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.

The buyback program also includes an anonymous no-questions-asked policy to encourage participation. Community leaders have been actively promoting the initiative through local radio, social media, and neighborhood organizations. “This isn’t just about guns—it’s about saving lives,” said Pastor Marvin Banks, whose church hosted one of the events.

By midday, hundreds of firearms had already been collected, including handguns, rifles, and assault weapons. Officials hope the program will complement long-term efforts to address the root causes of violence, such as poverty and lack of educational opportunities.

Critics argue that buyback programs alone won’t solve the problem, emphasizing the need for stricter gun laws and improved tracking of illegal firearms. City officials acknowledged these challenges but stressed that the initiative is an important tool in their broader safety strategy.
