New York City public schools began Winter Wellness Week today, a new initiative focusing on mental health, nutrition, and physical activity ahead of the holiday break. The program includes yoga classes, mindfulness workshops, and lessons on healthy eating habits.
Schools Chancellor David Banks highlighted the importance of addressing students’ well-being during a stressful time of year. “We want to ensure our students and staff feel supported, healthy, and ready for the new year,” Banks said during a visit to a school in the Bronx.
Parents and educators welcomed the program, emphasizing the need for more mental health resources in schools. “This is a great start, especially with everything students have been through over the past few years,” said Maria Torres, a teacher in Queens.
The DOE plans to evaluate the program’s impact and potentially expand it citywide next year.
