Summer at the Plaza 2025: Free Concerts and Community Events Light Up Albany

Albany, NY – June 19, 2025 — A beloved summer tradition returned to Albany’s Empire State Plaza on Thursday as the 2025 “Summer at the Plaza” series launched with a jubilant evening of jazz and dance. The opening night brought together residents, tourists, and local performers to kick off a season packed with live entertainment, cultural programming, and family-friendly activities—all offered free to the public.

The event featured performances by regional jazz ensembles and local dance groups, transforming the state complex into a festive stage of rhythm and community spirit. As in previous years, the series is designed to activate public space in the heart of New York’s capital with inclusive, accessible programming that appeals to a wide range of interests and age groups.

Running through the end of August, Summer at the Plaza includes weekly open-air concerts, movie screenings, fitness evenings, and an ever-popular rotation of food trucks. Thursday evenings remain the series’ cornerstone, with music and entertainment staged against the iconic backdrop of the Plaza’s reflecting pools and art deco towers.

A Diverse Lineup of Music and Entertainment

The headline act of the summer—the Capital Concert Series—begins July 9 and spans four weeks of nationally recognized musical performances. Kicking off the series will be hip-hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh, accompanied by Nice & Smooth and Suzi, with a special DJ battle showcasing talent from the 518 area. Subsequent weeks will feature Gogol Bordello on July 16, rock band Lit with Plush on July 23, and reggae star Tarrus Riley with the Blak Soil Band on August 6. All concerts are set to begin at 5:30 p.m., and contingency plans are in place to relocate performances indoors or under nearby highway overpasses in case of rain.

Midweek Programming Fosters Wellness and Local Culture

Beyond Thursday concerts, the Plaza offers midweek programming that celebrates local culture and promotes wellness. “Lunchtime at the Plaza” takes place every Wednesday from June 4 through August 13, pairing a farmers’ market with live musical acts. Performances range from blues and funk to Caribbean and soul music, creating a lively midday experience for downtown workers and visitors alike.

Tuesdays and Thursdays also feature “Fitness at the Plaza,” a wellness initiative presented by Highmark Blue Shield. Classes include yoga, aerobics, and strength training, and take place at the Cornerstone at the Plaza starting at 5 p.m. The program emphasizes the importance of active living and accessible fitness opportunities in public spaces.

Celebrating Diversity and Community Values

In addition to concerts and fitness, Summer at the Plaza includes signature cultural events that reflect Albany’s diverse community. Earlier in June, “Pride at the Plaza” celebrated LGBTQ+ pride with drag performances by nationally recognized queens Isabelle Brooks and Bosco, hosted by local icon Amanda Blair. The event featured musical acts, dancing, and inclusive programming for attendees of all ages.

The Fourth of July promises to be another highlight, featuring the Pop 2000 Tour—an all-star lineup of nostalgic pop acts including Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC, O-Town, Ryan Cabrera, and LFO—culminating in the region’s largest fireworks display. Presented by Market 32/Price Chopper, the celebration is expected to draw one of the largest crowds of the summer.

Families are especially encouraged to attend Kids Day on July 12 at West Capitol Park. Sponsored by MVP Health Care, this event includes live performances, interactive activities, and appearances from children’s entertainment characters like “Baby Shark,” ensuring fun and engagement for the youngest members of the community.

Building Bonds Through Shared Experience

Organizers estimate that tens of thousands will attend the various events throughout the summer. With accessibility at the forefront, live-streaming options and visitor surveys were launched on opening night to gauge attendee experience and gather feedback. According to OGS, the initial responses highlight widespread appreciation for the series’ inclusivity, quality, and community impact.

“This summer’s programming is about more than just music and entertainment,” said a representative from the Office of General Services. “It’s about using public space to bring people together, showcase local and national talent, and provide enriching experiences that are open to all.”

As the 2025 season unfolds, the Empire State Plaza reaffirms its place not only as a civic landmark but as a cultural hub where music, movement, and connection take center stage.
