NEW YORK, NY — The New York Yankees’ offense faltered on June 4, 2025, as they suffered a 4–0 shutout defeat to the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium. This loss, marking only the Yankees’ second time being held scoreless this season, evened the three-game series at one win apiece. The decisive finale is scheduled for June 5.

The game began unfavorably for Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt, who allowed three runs in the first inning. After issuing a leadoff walk to Steven Kwan, Schmidt surrendered a two-run homer to Ángel Martínez, followed by consecutive doubles that led to another run. Despite these early struggles, Schmidt settled down, pitching 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no additional runs allowed. However, the Yankees’ offense could not capitalize on his efforts, managing only five hits and grounding into three double plays, two of which came off the bat of Anthony Volpe .

Guardians starter Luis L. Ortiz dominated the Yankees’ lineup, delivering 5 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and allowing just three hits. Ortiz’s performance, supported by effective relief from Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase, secured the shutout victory for Cleveland .

Offensively, the Guardians capitalized early, with Martínez’s two-run homer setting the tone. José Ramírez extended his on-base streak to 30 games with a double and scored on Daniel Schneemann’s RBI single. Kyle Manzardo added a solo home run in the eighth inning, further cementing the Guardians’ lead .

The Yankees’ best scoring opportunity came in the ninth inning when Ben Rice reached base, and Cody Bellinger hit a ground-rule double, placing runners on second and third with one out. However, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. both struck out, ending the game and sealing the shutout .

This defeat snapped the Yankees’ five-game home winning streak and dropped their season record to 37–23. The Guardians improved to 33–27 with the win. The series finale on June 5 will feature Yankees’ left-hander Max Fried against Guardians’ right-hander Slade Cecconi, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.
