New York City — The Brooklyn Navy Yard is set to become a hub for green manufacturing under a $500 million redevelopment plan unveiled by Governor Kathy Hochul on Wednesday. The project aims to create over 10,000 jobs and position New York City as a leader in sustainable industry.
The redevelopment will focus on attracting companies involved in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainable building materials. The historic site, once a major shipbuilding center, will also include workforce training programs for local residents.
“This is about building a future that works for both our economy and our environment,” Hochul said. “The Navy Yard is the perfect place to lead the green manufacturing revolution.”
Community leaders praised the plan but stressed the importance of ensuring job opportunities for residents of nearby neighborhoods, such as Bedford-Stuyvesant and Fort Greene.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the first phase of redevelopment scheduled for completion by 2027.
