New York City — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced plans to raise subway and bus fares by 5% starting in August, citing ongoing budget shortfalls exacerbated by declining ridership and inflation. The base fare will increase from $2.90 to $3.05, the first hike since 2021.
Transit advocacy groups expressed frustration, arguing that the increase disproportionately affects low-income New Yorkers. MTA officials defended the decision, pointing to rising operational costs and the need to fund critical maintenance projects.
“Our focus remains on providing safe, reliable service while addressing financial realities,” said MTA spokesperson Lisa Dagliani.
Public hearings are scheduled for later this month.
